FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why do I need a Best Made Co. axe?
If used safely, responsibly, and with utmost care—for yourself, your fellow man, and the environment—an axe will be your best friend. Axes, like all tools, are here to make the world a better and easier place, but they do require sound judgement and precaution. An axe can bite you if you don’t respect it.
An axe shouldn't be kept in some dark corner of a tool shed. For all that an axe symbolizes, it can hold a place of much greater prominence and honor. Best Made axes are beautiful objects and timeless instruments: they will inspire for generations, they are to be collected, treasured, and used to chop wood or limb some branches. The more worn an axe, the more stories it will tell, and —just like their owners—axes become legends themselves.
Why are some of your axes more expensive than others?
Although all our axes are hand-made, some take longer, and require more care: most often this is due to the complexity of the pattern and the design and craftsmanship involved.
How many axes do you make?
We are the only company in the world that offers axes in small, limited edition quantities: in that sense you could say our axes are bespoke, couture, or artisinal products. We back this up with a certificate of authenticity, and a hand-engraved mark on every axe we sell.
Where are your axes available?
Our axes are only available on our website and Partners & Spade New York. Our Axes are available on a direct purchase program only – we want to connect with you. If you would like to discuss becoming a retail vendor we would be more than happy to hear your proposal for future consideration (please contact Graeme).
Who designs the axes?
Every axe is designed by Peter Buchanan-Smith. Peter is a Grammy award winning designer and author who has created designs for Wilco, Philip Glass, Brian Eno, David Byrne, Paper Magazine, The New York Times, and Isaac Mizrahi among others. Together, Peter and Graeme conceive the overall look, feel and spirit of each collection. Each Axe has our stamp of approval, we feel the balance and ensure that each one sings to us.
How long will my axe last?
One of the best features of an axe is that—if you take care of it—it will last for generations. We suggest keeping an axe in a dry environment, out of direct exposure to UV light. We suggest consulting the United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Services for more information. Common sense is your best friend when caring for a Best Made Axe – care for it right and consider it a new edition to the family.
How long will it take to get my axe?
We do not keep any finished product in stock. When you place an order we begin work on your axe. The design and painting process takes approximately 3-4 days, and depending on the temperature and humidity 3-5 coats of varnish can take 6-10 days to fully cure. Based on the current demand, orders take 1-5 weeks. We occasionally have waiting lists for certain products in which case we will notify you immediately of any unanticipated delays.
How do I use an axe, where can I learn more about axes?
There are numerous resources online, and we suggest consulting the United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Services who have an excellent website devoted to axe history, care, and safety. In the near future Best Made Co. will have more information about axes and their use posted on our website, and available in print. Before you chop down any tree, split any wood, or embark on any axe-related project, we strongly suggest contacting a local authority (see below for external links).
