Hippo Hardware

The inventory of Hippo Hardware’s vintage lighting department spans the entire top floor, and boasts a huge variety of fixtures all meticulously reconstructed by in-house technicians, like Zach Foley.
Owner Steven Miller is unwaveringly optimistic, always close at hand with a smile and laugh during our visit.
The electrician’s shop on Hippo’s third floor is home base for some of the country’s most sought after electrical restoration services.
Zach and Bobby can often be spotted restoring vintage locks behind the counter at the store’s entrance.
Zach brings a lock back up to standard wearing our Standard Tee.
The plumbing department is a shrine to the porcelain God.
The “lumberyard,” housed in the building’s basement, boasts a huge range of reclaimed doors, windows, and flooring surfaces.
Collected over the past 40 years, Steven Miller’s hippo paraphilia are omnipresent throughout the store, popping up where you least expect it.
Still smiling even after a long day, Steven Miller shoulders on our Panama Cloth Field Jacket and heads home.

Spring 2017, Hippo Hardware

Photography by Christina Holmes

Established in 1976, Hippo Hardware has long been a Portland fixture for restored fixtures of all vintage varieties.
A literal behemoth of the hardware scene, the store occupies nearly a square block with 30,000 square feet across
three floors. Its enormous inventory of reclaimed and refurbished lighting, plumbing, and hardware are sought out
by locals and the country’s top home restoration experts alike. A compassionate giant in the community as well,
proprietor Steven Miller donates 100% of prospective marketing dollars to local causes, forgoing advertising
in favor of supporting homeless shelters and charities.
