The Hidatsa Earth Blanket

Inspired by an iconic 20th-century photograph, our Hidatsa Earth Blanket depicts the horizon line, with grey mountains extending upward to the sky. The minimalist geometry pays homage to the work of Edward S. Curtis, whose vivid portraiture of western Native American tribes introduced unknowing easterners to the original cultures of the northern hemisphere. Story

Within the "as above, so below" landscape are symbolic motifs for wheat, grass, and seed, along with crosses representing the cardinal directions. Our Hidatsa Earth Blanket subtly references the fundamental components of life on the plains, much as Curtis' photography documented the elements of the American Indian experience during the early 1900s. Made in the USA by Pendleton Woolen Mills, this 82% pure virgin wool and 18% cotton blanket was created for the benefit of the American Indian College Fund, with a portion of the proceeds helping to fund scholarships for Native American students and tribal colleges.
