Story

You'll be hard pressed to find these records online or even at your local record shop, unless you live in Portland, Oregon. Made in extremely small pressings, we're proud to offer a new set of five rare vinyl gems, lovingly revived and re-released by Mississippi Records.

The True Story of Abner Jay
Raconteur and one-man-band troubadour Abner Jay sings his hard-times tales with deep soul and the haunted lilt inherent to men of vision. Songs such as "Cocaine" and "Vietnam" are equal parts protest folk, country-blues ballads, and outsider treatises. The songs are all stomped out by Jay and Jay alone--on electric banjo, harmonica, and bass drum--and illuminate both the artist's pure talent and his strikingly idiosyncratic aesthetic. The True Story Of is about as fine a collection as one could hope for from this nearly forgotten American oddity.

Hi-Fi Snock Uptown
Featuring 14 twisted songs produced by 'Banana' and Joe Bauer, Hi Fi Snock Uptown saw Hurley amplifying some of Armchair Boogie's willfully esoteric qualities and delivering an album that explores the full range of his sound, from blues to country and folk to playful sounds -- like his crow impressions on 'Old Black Crow.' As 'Twilight Zone' neatly puts it, 'everything is weird.' It also features some of his most loved songs such as 'Water Train,' 'Eyes, Eyes,' and the gorgeous traveling track 'Blue Driver.' This is the highly sought-after album sounding better than it ever has, complete with Hurley's own unmistakable sleeve art. It's housed in a deluxe, gatefold tip-on jacket.

Ghost Woman Blues: Country Blues 1927 - 1952
A compilation of absolutely must-have country blues from Mississippi, mixing well known artists playing their signature songs with more obscure musicians. Highlights include Bukka White's elemental "Fixin' to die", Lottie Kimbroughs' seldom heard "Don't Speak To Me", George Carters' haunting "Ghost Woman Blues", Willie Browns' existential "Future Blues", Monroe Moe Jackson's wild "Go Away From My Door" and many more hits. This is the real stuff and some of our all time favorite tunes.

I Woke Up One Morning In May
A beautiful compilation of lost blues dating from the 1930s to earlier. These songs will shake your very soul. Many of the tracks on this compilation are just voice and acoustic guitar, with titles including "Lonesome Road" by Cryin Sam Collins, "Cairo Blues" by Henry Spaulding, "Undertaker Blues" by Buster Johnson, "Bye Bye Baby Blues" by Little Hat Jones, "I'll Go With Her" by Robert Wilkins, "Rope Stretchin' Blues" by Blind Blake, "Fare The Well Blues" by Joe Callicott, "Wayward Girl Blues" by Lottie Kinbrough and more.

The Rain Don't Fall on Me: Country Blues 1927 - 1952
This compilation of mostly prewar country blues & gospel features everything from heavy meditative tracks to catchy dance numbers. Includes popular artists such as Blind Willie Johnson, Gary Davis, Bukka White, and Memphis Minnie alongside unfairly less documented artists such as Sonny Boy & his Pals, Lulu Jackson & Willie Mae Williams.
