Story

The classic canvas camp cot at its elegant, durable best. Built from Japanese oak (largely sourced from the Hida region) the design is inspired by koshou, a type of chair or bench used in Japanese shrines. This piece comes from SOMA, the workshop of Masaru Kawai — we met Masaru on our recent adventure to Japan, where we visited his workshop in Gifu Prefecture. He takes care to consider the age, variety, color, and history of the wood he uses, ensuring it meets the particular needs and function of the pieces he makes. Through his work, Masaru hopes to restore a connection to authentic Japanese culture by using native coniferous woods. Best Made is proud to be the exclusive carriers of this cot and three additional SOMA pieces in the U.S.A.
