Story

In the early 1900s, Pendleton Woolen Mills started producing colorful blankets that became popular at Indian trading posts. The native tribes, who had been using blankets made primarily from hides, readily integrated these wool weavings into their daily and ceremonial traditions. Pendleton’s lifelong designer, Joe Rawnsley, spent time with the tribes of northeastern Oregon and of the Southwest, learning about their preferences in color and pattern. Using modern jacquard technology, he translated this knowledge into highly detailed designs in vivid palettes. When compiling our limited selection of highly collectible vintage blankets, we consulted with Barry Friedman, the foremost dealer in antique Indian trade blankets, who works closely with Pendleton on their historical designs. He helped us choose this pure wool beauty from the 1920s that features an unnamed nine-element pattern. (Pendleton did not start naming all of its blankets until the mid-1990s.) It is in overall excellent condition, with its original label and felt binding still intact. There are a few small holes and pulled threads, as might be expected from a piece of history that is as much a work of art as it is a serviceable blanket.
