Story

An exploration of contemporary Japanese design, this book surveys everything from everyday objects and packaging to interior decorating and lighting elements. Its aim? To explore the ways in which Japanese design manages to transform materials — both natural and synthetic — into testaments of both tradition and innovation. The roughly 300 featured objects were chosen because of their distinctly “Japanese” character, and their influence on Western culture and design. The collection is organized by material, to underscore the link between design and substance — examples include works by Sori Yanagi, Shiro Kuramata, Naoto Fukasawa, Tokujin Yoshioka. Acclaimed graphic designer Kenya Hara pens the introductory essay to this beautiful tribute to Japan.
