A vignette of vintage and modern americana can be seen at the workshop of H. Gerstner & Sons (established in 1906). Clockwise, from far left: small locks that are put on machines or electrical junctions when something is being worked on; our own “what good...” enamel steel sign; a postwar motivational sign to the shop’s employees; and a late-century clock. The wooden flooring dates to 1937 (and has the acoustics to match). As chests like the ones bound for Best Made progress, they are moved on rolling tables from work station to work station, like the one (pictured here, with Steve) where drawers are fitted. Photo by Christina Holmes

Each piece of felt (like the one emblazoned with our "be optimistic" motto) is hand-cut and hand-fitted to the interior of Gerstner chests. Photo by Christina Holmes
The 41d Gerstner Chest for Best Made and Gerstner Utility Chest. For decades, Gerstner Tool Chests have been the pride of the most discriminating carpenters and machinists. We are excited to be part of this tradition. Photo by Christina Holmes

Spring 2016: H. Gerstner & Sons

H. Gerstner & Sons was founded in Dayton, Ohio by Harry Gerstner in 1906. Gerstner is now a 4th
generation family owned business known throughout the country for heirloom quality, handcrafted tool chests.
It’s acknowledged that those who keep their tools in a Gerstner Tool Chest are a cut above the rest. Harry Gerstner’s
basic principle still applies to every tool chest built – “A place for everything and everything in its place.”

Recognized for the inherent beauty of their devoted craftsmanship, Gerstner tool chests are a favorite of
machinists, carpenters, and collectors. Gerstner chests are born of the best available American hardwoods,
each hand-treated with a specialized lacquer to bring out the full range of character, and finished with uniquely designed
hardware for secure and stable use. The true depth of quality is not entirely evidenced by appearance: drawers and panels
are fitted by hand with tongue-and-groove constructions, to an exactness that produces the smoothest action. The
longevity of a Gerstner chest is best proven by the impressive work of Gerstner's restoration team,
who will bring any well-worn chest back to a factory finish, ready for another half century of use.
