Canterbury Uglies
I stopped playing rugby about twenty-five years ago, but I still wear rugby shirts, many made by Canterbury, the legendary New Zealand brand (which also used to make our Best Made rugby shirts).
Recently, I've been wearing their "Uglies." In the 1970s, faced with excess fabric from the production of official team rugby shirts, Canterbury created a line of practice jerseys from mismatched scraps. Each "Ugly" was one-of-a-kind, a beautiful hodgepodge of colors and patterns. Lucky for us the Uglies are still being made – shining examples of sustainability, utility, and style.
