The Shawl Neck has been high on the Best Made table of elements since our first adventure/catalog No. 1, in Wrangell-St. Elias, Alaska, and for good reason: it's built like no other. Made by Dehen Knitting Company in Portland, Oregon, on machines they've entrusted since the 1940s, this six-button shawl neck is the last bastion of quality American knitwear.

The construction tells you everything you need to know. Extra-heavy four-end jersey knit fabric, woven from two pounds of worsted wool, creates a sweater dense enough to shed rain, sleet, and snow. We wear this as a jacket and take it where no other sweater—and frankly, few jackets—will go. The shawl collar wraps close against weather, while 2x2 knit foldback cuffs seal at the wrists. Custom corozo buttons won't crack or fade like plastic. Hidden elbow patches reinforce the points where lesser sweaters come undone.

Partnering with Dehen, we refined the fit and upgraded durability with added interior reinforcement and welt pockets. We're proud to bring back the classic charcoal (with hidden Famous Red pockets), and introduce a striking new moss green. The process begins with selecting long-staple fibers, which are then combed to align parallel before spinning. This alignment creates a tight, smooth yarn that resists pilling and wear far better than carded wool. The result is a dense fabric that sheds water naturally, regulates temperature across a wide range of conditions, and grows more handsome with age. Worsted wool's tight construction explains why this sweater can function as outerwear in rain and snow—the fibers are packed tightly enough to create a wind-resistant barrier while maintaining breathability. Our fit prioritizes functionality without sacrificing style. We take a practical approach that emphasizes comfort, and ease of movement.

The model is 6' and 188 lbs and wears a size medium. This garment has been rinsed and will not shrink.

To find your size: Measurements in our size chart are actual garment measurements. We suggest measuring your favorite chore coat:

SHOULDER WIDTH (Seam to Seam): Measure straight across the back from one shoulder seam to the other.

CHEST (Flat): Measure across the chest from armpit to armpit, 1" below the armhole. Multiply by 2 for full circumference.

WAIST (Flat): Measure straight across 17" down from the high point shoulder. Multiply by 2 for full circumference.

BOTTOM OPENING (Flat): Measure straight across the hem from side to side. Multiply by 2 for full circumference.

SLEEVE LENGTH (From Center Back): Measure from center back of collar, across the shoulder, and down the outside of the sleeve to the cuff.

FRONT BODY LENGTH (From High Point Shoulder): Measure from the high point shoulder straight down to the bottom hem.

PRO TIP: Keep the tape flat and straight without pulling tightly. "Flat" measurements represent half the total circumference.

Wool this substantial requires little maintenance (if any). Brush off dried mud or debris with a stiff brush. Air out after wear—wool naturally resists odor and will refresh overnight hung in open air.

Wash / dry clean only when necessary. Hand wash in cool water with wool-specific detergent. Gently press out excess water without wringing or twisting. Lay flat on a towel to dry away from direct heat or sunlight, reshaping to original dimensions while damp.

Store folded, never on a hanger. Wool moths avoid clean garments, but for long-term storage, place in a breathable cotton bag with cedar or lavender.
