There are many things to love about this knife, but the first is how it feels in the hand: it just belongs there. It strikes an elusive balance. It's not too big, it's not too small. It's not too light, it's not too heavy. It has presence, but packs away when needed. For such a minimal design, every detail must be fully considered, and it is.

We partnered closely with Logan Gillihan of Northwest Bladeworks on this numbered-edition knife designed for the field, that lives with the best of Best Made. At the heart of The Field Knife is an American D2 tool steel—a tried and true high-carbon alloy that will take an edge and hold it through punishing applications. Gillihan hardens, tempers, and freehand shapes the full flat grind: a V-tapered bevel from the robust spine down to a precise 22-degree cutting edge. A fine-grit blasting and tumbling process, combined with the semi-stainless properties of the steel, provides a non-reflective, corrosion-resistant finish that is ready to work.

The layered G10 handle reveals our signature "famous red" liner laminated at the inside edge, and the Kydex sheath is individually form-fitted and tension-adjusted by Logan to fit each knife. The Field Knife embodies everything we look for in a functional fixed blade: the best materials for the job, exceptional craftsmanship, and an uncomplicated design refined by use.

Each knife is numbered and made in an edition of 50. Ships in 2-3 weeks.

Logan Gillihan has been making things with his hands from a very young age, and got his start making knives in 2015 while studying Mechanical Engineering at Oregon State University. While applying what he learned on campus to honing his craft at home, he developed a process for function driven design and precise, repeatable results.

Logan was first introduced to the world of forging at the OSU blacksmithing club, where he made his first billet of Damascus steel. This opened up a new (old) world of craftsmanship to pursue (as well as a new love for restoring old power hammers), with a focus of sole authorship, high performance materials like stainless and titanium Damascus. Logan is also in the process of testing for a Journeyman Smith rating with the American Bladesmith Society.

In 2021, Logan left his home in the Pacific Northwest to become the Design Engineer for Coal Iron Works in Anderson, Indiana where he has spent the last five years designing and building high performance forging equipment for some of the most talented smiths alive.

Logan has continued to refine his craft and grow his capabilities for over a decade, and in addition specializing in robust fixed blades and frame lock folding knives, designs and manufactures parts for a number of other makers in the industry.
