We discovered this gem from metalworker Matthew Hall—a horseshoe crab cast in solid bronze that serves as both bottle opener and small sculptural object. Made through lost wax casting, a technique dating back to 2500 BC, each shell begins as a wax model before being transformed into a permanent bronze piece at a foundry near Hall's studio.
The process creates natural variations in texture and patina, capturing the ribbed details and organic form of the original specimen. The heft of solid bronze gives it a presence—this is the kind of object that soon finds a permanent place on a desk or mantle, ready for action but appreciated at rest.
Cast in the USA, it arrives in our gift box, making it as thoughtful to give as it is satisfying to use.
Bronze naturally develops a patina over time—a darkening and variation in color that adds character and depth. This is normal and desirable. If you prefer to maintain the brighter bronze finish, occasional polishing with a soft cloth will restore its luster. For routine cleaning, mild soap and warm water work fine. Dry thoroughly after washing.
