Our Okayama Selvege Chambray originates in Ibara City, Okayama Prefecture, a region that has anchored Japan's textile industry since its post-war reconstruction. The fabric is woven at a mill founded in 1951, using traditional Sakamoto Automatic Shuttle Looms. Though far less efficient than modern air jet looms, these vintage machines create the firm texture and true selvedge edges that distinguish this exceptional fabric.
For the indigo colorway, our mill employs "rope dyeing" —a traditional Japanese textile technique where threads are bound tightly with resist materials before dyeing, creating distinctive patterns when the bindings are removed. Natural indigo is used through multiple dipping cycles, with binding materials and techniques passed down through generations. The beauty lies in the subtle irregularities—the slight bleeding of dye around bindings creates soft, organic edges that distinguish this as a handmade material.
Made in Portugal's northern textile region, where shirt construction has been refined across generations. Portuguese tailors are renowned for their meticulous approach to garment construction—from precise collar setting to flawless seaming. This heritage of European craftsmanship ensures each shirt meets the exacting standards that separate superior workwear from the merely functional.
Every construction detail honors the chambray's working heritage while meeting our exacting standards. Double-needle stitching at stress points, our "cuff-to-elbow-tuff" reinforced sleeves, natural corozo buttons, and careful attention to fit ensure this shirt will endure decades of wear while maintaining its essential character.
