The Utility Vest is near and dear to us, having first debuted as a special project by Best Made's founder in the days before he re-acquired the brand.

Our vest is fully lined with two layers of a fine compact cord woven in Osaka, Japan, a material we worked with extensively in the old Best Made, and have always admired for its comfort and durability. The vest features seven roomy pockets—six on the front and one zippered pocket inside—and is equipped with YKK brass zippers with an O-ring pull on the front.

Setting this vest apart are several details you'll be hard pressed to find elsewhere, including two Cordura Trulock™ webbing loops on the hip (good for a cordless drill, hammer, or tape measure) and a utility loop on the inside chest (good for hanging specs or clipping a pen). The vest comes pre-washed, and while it fits true to size, we recommend sizing up if you plan to wear a sweatshirt or layer heavy clothing underneath.

"Despite having developed many apparel and bag projects in my career, I did not know how to sew. So I bought an old Singer 301A sewing machine and began making things. One of the first projects I assigned myself was a vest. For over a year I made the same vest over and over. Finally I landed on something that I could wear.

Learning to sew—transforming a flat piece of fabric into a functional object, making (not buying)—felt like some sort of miracle. It was daunting at first, and then downright thrilling. Being in my workshop, hunkered over my 301A was as good as any adventure I'd ever been on.

My sewing skills — which are far from expert — are in service to me, the designer. Developing products with my own two hands has given me an unprecedented appreciation for the skill, and energy that goes into making a simple garment. Sewing has also helped me forge an intimacy with the materials, the notions, and the tools of the trade." — Peter Buchanan-Smith

The compact cotton cord of our vest is woven at a small mill in Kiazuka City, Osaka, setting it apart from mass-produced workwear with its highly artisanal construction on smaller looms and meticulous attention to detail. Each piece emerges uniquely different, thanks to the fabric's remarkable character, featuring a strong memory that creates distinctive highs and lows in its texture.

The vest bears two interior labels (on neck and chest) commemorating this one-of-a-kind release.
