“I met my first hanten in a drafty old ryokan on the island of Yakushima. I wore it on the short walks to and from the onsen, out to collect firewood, and late at night around the irori. We were inseparable. I learned then that—for good reason—the hanten is an essential piece of the Japanese cold climate puzzle. This edition is made exclusively for us at one of Japan's last remaining hanten makers, a rare vertical mill where the same hands that dye and weave the fabric also construct the garment. The outer fabric features a chambray weave, lined with a red hickory stripe that pays homage to traditional workwear. The quilted construction traps warmth while maintaining remarkable lightness. The traditional unisex cut is deliberately forgiving—designed for layering or as a bathrobe.
