The Architecture of Trees
The Architecture of Trees
A magisterial reference and a quiet object of contemplation. The Architecture of Trees renders 212 species of European trees in pen-and-ink at exacting 1:100 scale, both leafed and bare, with the kind of patience and precision that comes only from decades of looking.
The product of over twenty years of obsessive study by Italian architects Cesare Leonardi and Franca Stagi, the book gathers more than 550 quill-pen drawings of trees, each species shown twice (with and without foliage) and accompanied by tables of seasonal color variation and computer-drawn projections of the shadows cast hour by hour, season by season. A glossary, detailed sketches of cones, berries, and leaves, and essays on the architectural and ecological logic of trees round out the volume. First published in Italian in 1982 and a touchstone in landscape architecture firms ever since, it appeared in English for the first time in this 2019 edition, which preserves the original drawings and translates the text in full.
Written and illustrated by Cesare Leonardi (1935–2021) and Franca Stagi (1937–2008), with additional essays by Andrea Cavani and Giulio Orsini. Published in 2019 by Princeton Architectural Press. 424 pages, hardcover, illustrated throughout with more than 550 pen-and-ink drawings.
