Weighing in at almost 2 lbs with a 5.25" Kobe carbon steel blade, the Azuma is an extremely compact tool, with its mass concentrated forward, where it means business. The wide bevel makes this guy a great splitter. Think of it like a mini-maul: perfect for kindling and smaller rounds. The Azuma packs the authority of a much larger tool, and in its Best Made branded Japanese canvas tool roll, it packs into something that can be neatly stowed.

Word has it this style of hatchet has become popular in Japan among notable ramen makers, used to dispatch pork bones. It will open a coconut and quarter a hard winter squash without drama. For hunters, the weight is the point. It splits a spine, sections ribs, and takes down a shoulder in one committed stroke, which is the difference between a clean cut and a ragged one. Dry it after washing; high-carbon steel is reactive, and that patina is earned, not a flaw.

Product Details
Established in 1943, our bladesmith has produced these hatchets since 1977 in Sanjo, Japan, a legendary ironworking region. The Azuma is laminated: S55C carbon steel from Kobe Steel forged between layers of hot-rolled low-carbon steel, ground to a wide double bevel. The heft is deliberate — the profile is short and deep so the mass sits behind the edge rather than out along the blade, which is what lets it split instead of merely cut.

The spine is finished in black oxide, sandblasted to a pear skin texture that sheds moisture and reduces friction in a deep split. Japanese white oak handle, black ferrules. Blade 5.25", overall 13.75", 1.8 lbs. Supplied with a blade roll in 10 oz. Japanese canvas, brass grommet, red leather tie.

After Each Use: Clean the blade with a dry cloth. Remove all sap, dirt, and moisture. Wipe the handle clean. Apply a thin coat of oil to the blade. Use mineral oil or camellia oil. This prevents rust.

Storage: Store in a dry place. Avoid damp basements or garages.

Sharpening: Sharpen when the blade dulls. Use a whetstone, not a grindstone. Maintain the original bevel angle. Work slowly to avoid overheating the steel. Finish with a fine stone for the sharpest edge.

Handle Care: Oil the handle monthly. Use boiled linseed oil or tung oil. Sand lightly if the wood becomes rough. Use fine-grit sandpaper.
