When we set out to develop this notebook, we had some straightforward yet demanding requirements:

1. It had to last, it had to be hardcover and cloth-bound.
   
2. It needed to be easily labeled and stand out on a shelf or cluttered work surface.
3. The pages had to be numbered and lay flat when open.
4. The layout had to lend itself to various types of note-making: long-hand, lists, pictures, maps, sketches, and diagrams.
5. The pages needed to be perforated for clean removal without compromising the binding's integrity.
