Story

To fend off rain, sleet or snow, to protect through warrens of backcountry thickets, we wear this sweater as a jacket, and take it where no other sweater—and few jackets—will go. Little has changed to the Dehen shawl neck sweater coat since it was first rolled out in the 40s, it's still made on the same machines, and it's safe to say no one else is making sweaters this robust now. Working directly with Dehen Knitting Co. in Portland Oregon we made slight adjustments to the fit to enhance the overall performance, and are proud to present an instant staple to our catalog. Please take our word: in your lifetime this sweater will do the work of at least a dozen.

Notes

"Almost three pounds of worsted wool went into making this sweater and I swear it looks as good - if not better - than the day I boarded Paul Claus's Piper Cub bush plane for our maiden Best Made adventure in Wrangell-St. Elias, Alaska. Since then I have taken it everywhere I go: Idaho, Japan, Scotland, Patagonia (twice), and all points in-between. This sweater has never failed to keep me warm, dry, and looking handsome. I have held numerous specimens of early Dehen sweaters from the 1940s and 50s, and although they're about 70 years older than mine, and have seen plenty more adventures, they look just as good. Still knit on the same framed in Portland, Oregon, these sweaters have seen very little change in their method of production. And as hard as you may try to find something that can compete, trust me: you won't. In an age when clothes are designed with a disheartening life span, you can mark my word that the Shawl Neck will prove to be a trusted old friend, an unflinching defender." - Peter Buchanan-Smith, Founder
