Most pepper mills are a series of moving parts: springs, burrs, gears, and, god forbid, even batteries. The Skeppshult Cast Iron Grinder is two pieces of solid iron that grind against each other. That's it. Drop contents in the base, insert the grinder cup, and a twist cracks them open. All that's left is to store the ground contents under the walnut lid. Nothing to strip, jam, or replace.

But what really sets this apart is the weight. At two and a half pounds, it has the heft of a small cannonball. And as such, it does much of the work for you. The grind comes from pressure and turning. The rounded base fits comfortably in the palm of your hand (works equally well for left- and right-handed cooks).

Like all good cast iron, it improves with use. The seasoning deepens, the walnut darkens, and the grind settles into its own rhythm.

Product Details
Skeppshult has been casting iron since 1906 in the small village in southern Sweden that gives the foundry its name. The business has been passed down through generations, and everything is still made in-house. They pour each piece by hand, then grind, mill, and finish it by hand over several days. The foundry casts from 100% virgin iron ore, chosen for its purity, and runs on renewable energy.

Designed by the Finnish design duo Carl & Carl, each grinder is seasoned at the foundry with organic canola oil, so it arrives ready to use, and is capped with an FSC-certified walnut lid.
